Baytown has no beach. It has three bays with mud bottoms, a ship channel, and a lot of shoreline you can't swim from. The nearest sand, in order of drive:
1. Sylvan Beach, La Porte — 25 minutes. Over the Fred Hartman, then down 146. A county park with a real sand beach on Galveston Bay, a fishing pier, a pavilion, restrooms, and calm water. Bay water, not surf: brown, warm, shallow, fine for kids. Free to walk in; a fee for the pier some days. The closest "beach day" and the one most Baytown families use. 2. Kemah and Seabrook — 35 minutes. The Boardwalk isn't a beach; the bayfront parks nearby have small strips of sand and the restaurants. A day with rides and shrimp. 3. Galveston — 50 minutes. The real thing: Stewart Beach for families, East Beach for the crowd, the Seawall for the walk, Galveston Island State Park for the quiet end. Surf, seaweed some months, and the whole Gulf. Parking on the Seawall is paid; the beach itself is free. 4. Bolivar Peninsula — an hour and a quarter via the Galveston ferry, or ninety minutes around through Winnie. Crystal Beach: drive-on-the-sand, houses on stilts, fewer people. The Baytown cabin crowd's choice. 5. Surfside and Quintana — an hour and a half. Past Freeport; emptier still.
The water. Galveston Bay's beaches are calm and brown; the Gulf beaches have surf and, some months, sargassum. The state's beach-watch program posts bacteria readings for every Gulf beach and the county for the bay parks; we link them, and after a heavy rain the bay readings climb for days. Rip currents are real on the Gulf side; swim near a lifeguard stand in Galveston.
What to bring from Baytown. The cooler from H-E-B, a tent for shade (there's none), reef-safe sunscreen, cash for Sylvan's pier, and a change of clothes for the drive home because everyone's wet. Boudin from the 146 gas station if you're going via the bridge.
The bridge rule. The Fred Hartman is the way to all of these. When it's closed for wind — a norther or a storm — the ferry is the alternative and it's a line. Check the Living Here page before a beach run on a windy day.
Questions people ask. Is there a beach in Baytown? No; the closest is Sylvan Beach in La Porte, 25 minutes. Can you swim in Baytown? The water parks; not the bays. The swimming page explains. How far is Baytown from Galveston? About 50 minutes over the bridge and down I-45.
