Baytown with a dog

Where the dog is welcome, where it isn't, and where it'll be happiest.

The walks. - Not the Nature Center. Pets aren't allowed — service dogs only — and it's a bird sanctuary, so that's the right rule. Leave the dog home for that one. - Jenkins Park and Evergreen — the two with the most shade and the most trail. Evergreen's 119 acres are the long walk; Jenkins has the playground if you're walking a dog and a child at once. - Bayland Park shoreline — the sunset walk, on leash, with the boats to watch and the gulls to ignore. - Texas Avenue — the town walk; water bowls appear outside a couple of the storefronts in summer, and Art Alley is a good turnaround point. - The Goose Creek trail — the bayou-side path where it exists; the parks inventory has the segments.

The patios that say yes. Luna's patio, Thompson's picnic tables (on leash, and the gulls will test the dog's character), Yepez Vineyard's tables under the trees on a Sunday. The Hyatt terrace is a maybe — call. Every listing on this site with a patio has a dog line on its page once we've confirmed it; if it's blank, we haven't, and you should ask.

Off leash. Baytown's dog-park situation is thin and we say so. The city's parks inventory is the source; the calendar carries park-improvement projects as they're funded, and a dog park comes up at the listening tours every year. Until then, the fenced yard at a friend's house is the dog park, and Evergreen at seven in the morning on a weekday is close enough.

The practical. - Heat. From May to September the pavement burns paws after ten in the morning — the five-second test with the back of your hand — so walk at dawn or after dark, and the water bowl comes with you. Heatstroke in dogs looks like heavy panting and stumbling; shade and water first, then the vet. - Vets. The regular vets are on the health page; the nearest 24-hour emergency vet is on the Houston side, with the distance listed. Know it before you need it; the drive is the same at 2 a.m. either way. - Licensing and animal control. The city licenses dogs and runs the shelter; the number for a loose dog or a found one is on the city-hall page. Adoptions are there too, and they're good ones. Microchip; the shelter scans. - Hurricanes. The evacuation plan includes the dog or it isn't a plan: crate, records, a week of food, and a hotel on the list that takes pets — the Stay page marks which do (Red Roof takes one free; Captain Suites doesn't take any). - Fireworks. The Fourth and New Year's are loud here and the shelter fills the next morning. Inside, collar on, chip current.
