The Houston day trip that isn’t Galveston
35 minutes east, a bridge that looks like a poster, and a peninsula of birds Houston forgets it has.
Most Houstonians know Baytown as the refinery on the way to somewhere else. That is a failure of curiosity. Take I-10 east or 146 over the Hartman Bridge. Budget a full day, not a lunch.
Arrive hungry: Cuban Cafe. Walk the Nature Center (500 acres, $4). Downtown ACE in the afternoon — it is not Montrose, and it is not trying to be. It is a historic main street with new murals and old steaks. Leave over the bridge at sunset so the drive home is the postcard.
If you only have three hours: bridge, Nature Center, cafecito. That is still a better afternoon than another lap of the Loop.
If you have the ferry in you: Lynchburg is free and short, HCTRA hours (weekdays 4:30 a.m.–8 p.m., weekends 11–6:30), San Jacinto is the monument on the other side, and you can still be home for dinner. Do not skip the pull-off photos on the Baytown approach. Do not stop on the span.
