Mont Belvieu, explained

The town on the salt domes. Fifteen minutes up Highway 146 from Baytown, across the county line, and the reason half the license plates at the Garth Road H-E-B say Chambers County.

What it is. Mont Belvieu sits on the Barbers Hill salt dome, and the salt is the whole story. Caverns leached out of it a thousand feet down hold more natural-gas liquids than anywhere else in the country — ethane, propane, butane and the rest, piped in from every shale field in Texas and piped out to the plants along the ship channel and the export docks. Enterprise Products, Energy Transfer and Targa run the fractionators and the storage along 146 and FM 1942; the tank farms you see from the highway are the visible tenth of it. A city of a few thousand households carries a tax base that would flatter a city of a hundred thousand, and it shows in the schools, the parks and the pavement.

What it's like to live there. Barbers Hill ISD is the draw, and it's the first thing anyone says. Families cross the county line for the district, and the subdivisions follow them: new builds off FM 1409, 3180 and 565, larger lots than Baytown, a lot of trucks with company logos. The trade is distance. The hospital, most restaurants and the big-box shopping are still in Baytown, and the drive down 146 at plant shift change is the one complaint every resident shares. There's no transit; the second car is not optional.

Where people go. - Eagle Pointe Recreation Complex — the golf course, the pool, the ballfields and the clubhouse; the city's front porch and the reason the recreation pages on this site send Baytown families north. - City Hall, 1 Town Center Blvd — the council chamber and the meeting rooms are where the civic life happens; the police station and the community center have their own addresses on the city's site. - Highway 146 at FM 565 — where the grocery, the pharmacies, the urgent care and the newer chains landed as the town grew; the closest thing to a main street. - Barbers Hill stadium on Friday nights — the town's real downtown, one night a week in the fall.

Getting there from Baytown. Garth Road north to 146, or Highway 99 — the Grand Parkway — from the I-10 side. Twelve to twenty minutes depending on the plant traffic; the ring-town distance table on this site has the pairs. No bus runs there, from Baytown or anywhere.

What Mont Belvieu is not. It's not a suburb of Baytown and it doesn't think of itself as one. Separate city, separate county (Chambers, not Harris), separate school district, its own zoning code, its own police and its own budget.
