Which jail

Baytown Police book into the Baytown city jail for city charges and minor offenses, and most people are transferred or released within a day or two. Felonies and county charges go to the Harris County Jail in downtown Houston. The east side and Mont Belvieu are Chambers County, and the county jail is in Anahuac. Which one depends on who arrested them and where; the arresting agency's name on the paperwork tells you.

Finding someone

  • Harris County: the Sheriff's Office runs a public inmate search by name or booking number; it updates within hours of booking. The link is on this page.
  • Chambers County: the Sheriff's jail roster is public; the link is here.
  • Baytown city jail: call the police department's non-emergency line; there's no public online roster for the city holding facility. The number is on the emergency page.
  • Mont Belvieu PD books into Chambers County.

Bail and bonds

Bail is set at the first appearance — in Harris County usually within a day, by a magistrate, sometimes with a personal bond (no money) for minor charges. The bail-bond offices cluster near the county jails, not in Baytown; the directory lists the ones that serve Baytown families. A bondsman charges a percentage of the bond, non-refundable; a cash bond at the county is refundable at the end of the case. The county's page explains both, and it's linked.

What to bring, what to expect

An ID and the person's full legal name and date of birth. Property comes back at release. Phone calls from inside are collect or through the county's paid system; the link explains it. Visitation is scheduled and by rule; the sheriff's page has the hours. A lawyer: the county's public-defender office and the bar's referral line are on the help page, and the Spanish-language page has the bilingual ones.

Records

Arrest and court records are public through the district clerk (Harris or Chambers); the justice-court FAQ covers citations and minor cases. Expunctions and nondisclosure orders are a lawyer's question; the help page has legal aid.
