Where, when, and how — for Harris County and Chambers County, because Baytown is both and the rules differ at the county line.
Where, when, and how — for Harris County and Chambers County, because Baytown is both and the rules differ at the county line.
Which county you vote in
Your address decides: most of Baytown is Harris County; the east side past Cedar Bayou and Mont Belvieu are Chambers. Your voter registration card says which, and the zip-codes page maps it. It matters because each county runs its own elections office, polling places, and early-voting sites.
Registering
Texas registers by mail or in person — not online. The form is at the library, the county tax office (the same visit as the truck), the post office, and downloadable; the deadline is 30 days before an election. The county's voter lookup, linked here, tells you whether you're registered and where you vote.
Early voting
Two weeks before election day, at any early-voting site in your county — Harris has dozens, and the Baytown ones are usually the community center or a city building; Chambers has a handful, with Mont Belvieu's at city hall. The counties post the list and hours for each election; this page pulls them when they're posted and shows them with the dates.
Election day
Harris County uses countywide vote centers — any location in the county — and Chambers uses precinct polling places, so check which applies. Photo ID: a Texas driver license or ID, a passport, a military ID, a citizenship certificate, a handgun license, or one of the alternatives with a declaration; the state's list is linked. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
What's on the ballot here
City council and mayor (Baytown's districts and the listening tours are on the city-hall page); the school boards for Goose Creek and Barbers Hill; the county offices; the state and federal races on the even years; bond elections and the college district when they come up. The sample ballot from the county, linked, is the way to see yours.
Deadlines, plainly
Registration closes 30 days before election day. Early voting runs from the 17th day before to the 4th day before, with the counties setting hours. Mail-ballot applications are due 11 days before. The counties' pages carry the exact dates for each election and this page pulls them when posted; nothing here is typed as a calendar date, because they shift.
The local elections
Baytown's council seats are by district plus at-large; Mont Belvieu's council is its own; the school boards are single-member districts in Goose Creek and at-large in Barbers Hill; Lee College's trustees serve the district. May is the local election month most years, November the big one, and turnout in May is where a few hundred votes decide a seat.
Mail ballots
For 65 and over, disabled, or out of the county: an application to the county's early-voting clerk, by the deadline; the county pages have the form and the dates.
