Over 95°: Pirates Bay if the kids will do a lazy river, Calypso Cove at N.C. Foote Park (2428 W Main) if they won’t — $6 weekdays, dump bucket, you can actually watch them. Weekdays beat weekends. Bring more sunscreen than you own.
Always: the Lynchburg Ferry. It is free, it moves, there are ships. Weekends it starts at 11 a.m. Hold the rail at Burnet Park while you wait. San Jacinto Monument is the history-class version of the same outing — observation deck if the kids will do stairs and a movie.
Town Square ice rink from Thanksgiving through January is the winter version of the same idea — something that moves, in public, with other families. Heart and Whisk on North Main for the cinnamon roll after.
